It's a goodish read but it does adopt too many tropes of conventional manga storytelling for me, still could be worth checking out. "Claymore" by Yagi Norihiro is a toned down version of Devilman themes but I kinda think it fits, at least a bit. It's more of a mystery / action / scifi work but it has gore, devil themes, and it's pretty cool. I would say in some ways "Dorohedoro" by Q Hayashida fits into Devilman themes. And it received an anime adaptation I think

He is also the author of the way more popular "Uzumaki" which is perhaps a good intro to his stuff, since it's a longer more serial format. But there is a sensual aesthetic to it also which is compelling.

He's basically a horror mangaka and his works are relatively shorter or self contained but for instance his "Tomie" series gives pretty raw/empty feelings (theme of Villain Winning). Idk how much this fits, but Junji Ito works in general might hit this for you. Since it is quite different from what you would think of if you are thinking "yeah this will be like Devilman" Pochita vs Amon, Pochita is kind of the King Devil while Amon yes is a mighty demon but not even close to the importance Pochita takes in terms of being able to erase other Devils which then erases the correspondent feared thing in the human world.Īll that said, is CSM worth reading? It's very easily binged and very entertaining but like me you might get disappointed by its ending (of part 1). There also isn't any time period of Devils being gone then coming back, they've always been around. Makima has no connection to God, there is no God in CSM-verse to begin with, and she isn't a fallen angel, she's just a type of Devil.ĬSM has a much more sci-fi take on the concept of Devils, as in humanity's collective unconsciousness wills them into being and strengthens them with fear.

The idea Makima is actually in favor of humanity, is also different since Ryo/Satan opposed humanity because he believed they were favored by God over demonkind. If Makima has won at the end you could potentially draw an analogy, but even then it would be pretty different. It's also got a more conventional morality and narrative to it, less subversive compared with Devilman.Īlso no Apocalypse happens. "About this title" may belong to another edition of this title.CSM has very little to do with Devilman, the only commonality is in terms of the MC fusing with a Devil, and the fact "Devils" are labeled as such.īut there is no Ryo/Satan equivalent for example, and it's just wildly distinct in all sorts of other ways. Seven Seas' representative commented that this was a good entry to the Devilman franchise, and I'm inclined to agree with him – not only did the book leave me wanting volume two, but also curious to check out the original." ―Rebecca Silverman, Anime News Network ".the art is very reminiscent of the original series without being a slave to recreating the 1970s, forming a nice mix of styles. But the manga version was something much more original, much more crazy, much more Nagai.” ―Jason Thompson, Anime News Network
